Pokémon Go is a Nintendo-owned game that is taking over the world this summer. You can finally realize your childhood dream to catch a Pokémon. But, how do you make Pokémon "appear" around you so you can go and catch them? This is realized through a technology called "Augmented Reality (AR)," which is an interaction between the game and real world. As you can see in the picture below - at the right upper corner, there is a button that says "AR." Augmented Reality embeds computer graphics into the actual world, and with technology advances, people should not be able to distinguish the reality from the computer images.
There are also Virtual Reality (VR), which Virtual Reality (VR) is an artificial and computer-generated simulation of the real world. VR is can be achieved by waring a headset like Facebook's Oculus, and is widely used in gaming and 3D movies. In addition, VR can be used to in trainings, e.g. create flight simulation for pilots. Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is a coding language that achieves VR by creating a series of images and setting interactions among them. AR differs from VR, because AR adds a virtual component on top of the reality, while VR creates a complete new "reality".

I always find myself questioning do people actually like the game, or is it the nostalgia that sells? As someone who played all the pokemon games, I never felt the desire to play this game. Maybe I'm just missing out on all the fun.
ReplyDeleteI think AR is indeed a great feature of this game. With AR, you feel like a Pokemon is in front of you and this really increases the fun of capture.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinions, there are two big reasons why Pokemon has become so popular in the world. First, Pokemon Go makes people recall their precious childhood memories and makes their childhood dreams come true. This games is not just simply for killing time. It has special meanings for people. Second, the use of VR and other technologies contributes a lot to Pokemon go. As a result, people seem like they do live in the real Pokemon world.
ReplyDeleteThe overwhelming success of incorporating AR capabilities into a classic game makes me wonder how AR will be used next. I imagine that many companies, after seeing the success of Pokemon Go, will try and imitate their model in some regards. Whether that is in a new AR game or in AR enhanced training programs like you mentioned, the possibilities truly are endless.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting! I have never played Pokemon Go and I didn't know that much about it, but I think that augmented reality is an incredible concept. The mixture between what you are seeing in real life and a computer-generating image is an amazing advancement in technology. I am sure there will be many similar games to follow.

ReplyDeleteI think the success for Pokemon Go is just like Ricky said that it sells because of nostalgia. I myself have played Pokemon for a long time and when Pokemon is released I downloaded it immediately. I think the combination of AR and catching Pokemon just reminds people all the fun time they had when playing the old game. Overall this is a really good combination of computer science and business strategy.
